The University of Utah M2 hockey program has announced its 2023-2024 regular season schedule. The Skatin’ Utes will enter their third consecutive season playing at the Division 2 level of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Additionally, the Utes will play in the Pacific 8 Hockey Conference. Fresh off a second-place finish in 2023, Utah will look to win its first Pac-8 Championship since 2016, when the program last had an M2 team.
Utah’s first four series will be on the road, spanning from September 15 to October 15. The season opener will be played against in-state rival Weber State on September 15 followed by Utah Valley University on September 16.
The first departure from the state of Utah will bring the Utes north to Big Sky Country. On Friday, September 29, the Utes will face off against Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. Saturday, Utah travels to Missoula to battle the University of Montana Grizzlies.
Continuing their travels north, Utah will face Boise State University in Idaho for a two-game series on October 6 and 7. These two teams last met during the 2015 season where the Utes went 1-1 against the Broncos.
The final series on the season-opening road trip will bring the Skatin’ Utes to the California coast. Utah will first play San Jose State University on October 12 then University of California Berkeley on October 13. The Utes will repeat these match-ups again on October 14 and 15 playing San Jose State and California Berkeley, respectively. Utah went 2-1 against SJSU last season including a 9-3 win against the Spartans at the PAC-8 Championships. The Utes beat California twice in last season’s games. This will be Utah’s first weekend of Pac-8 Conference play.
The Skatin’ Utes will play their home opener against University of California San Diego on Friday, October 20, 2023. Game two will be played the following day on Saturday, October 21.
One of the most intriguing match-ups for the Utes will come in the Emerald City as a rematch of the 2023 PAC-8 Championship game will be played. Utah will face the University of Washington in Seattle on October 27 and 28. The Utes will look to avenge their 3 losses against the Huskies last season.
After a bye weekend on November 3 and 4, Utah will have rival week with travel to Utah State University on November 9th, and then host Weber State and Utah State on November 10 and 11. The Utes are searching for their first wins against these teams since returning to the M2 level in 2021.
The second annual Beehive Showcase returns to Salt Lake City on November 16, 17, 18, and 19. The Skatin’ Utes will face off against Grand Canyon University, University of Providence, Boise State, and California State University at Northridge.
The home-stand continues as Western Washington University comes to town on December 1 and 2 to take on the Utes. Utah went 2-0 against the Vikings in Bellingham last season.
Utah will then head to Los Angeles to start off the second half of the season against the University of Southern California. These games will be played on January 12 and 13. The Skatin’ Utes beat USC in both meetings last season.
Returning to home ice, Utah plays Utah Valley University for the second time on Thursday, January 18. The weekend series will be played against Washington State University on January 19 and 20.
The last home series of the season will be against Eastern Washington University on January 26 and 27. Utah went 2-0 against the Eagles last year. M2 Senior Night will be celebrated at 7:30 pm MDT on January 27.
The following weekend, February 2 and 3, the Utes will head to Ogden to compete in the Annual Wasatch Cup tournament, where the best college team in Utah will be crowned. Utah has won the Wasatch Cup four times since its began in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2020.
Utah will head to Spokane February 9-11 to compete in the Pac-8 Championships. The Utes have played for the championship game every season they participated in the PAC-8, winning in 2013, 2014, and 2016.
